Communication is key

At nursery, supporting children’s language development is an important part of everything we do. The early years are a crucial time for building communication skills, and we provide many opportunities throughout the day for children to listen, speak, and express themselves.

Children learn language through interaction. Our staff regularly engage in conversations with the children during play, activities, and everyday routines. By asking questions, introducing new words, and encouraging children to talk about their ideas and experiences, we help them build confidence in communicating with others.

Stories, songs, and rhymes also play a big role in developing language skills. Reading books together helps children hear new vocabulary and understand how language works. Singing nursery rhymes and repeating familiar phrases supports memory, rhythm, and pronunciation.

We also encourage children to develop their language through play. Role-play areas, small world activities, and creative play allow children to use their imagination and practise conversations with their friends. These experiences help children learn how to take turns in conversation, share ideas, and listen to others.

Our team carefully supports each child at their own stage of development. Some children may be beginning to use single words, while others are forming longer sentences and telling stories. By creating a nurturing and language-rich environment, we help every child feel confident to communicate in their own way.
