At Central and Ashgate, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, develop and thrive in a supportive and inclusive environment.

We welcome children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and are committed to ensuring all children receive the support they need to reach their full potential.

Our practice follows the guidance set out in the Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice and the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Our Inclusive Approach

We recognise that all children develop at their own pace and may require different levels of support during their early years.

Our nursery promotes an inclusive environment where children are valued and supported as individuals. We adapt our teaching, activities and environment to meet the needs of every child.

We support children by:

  • Providing a nurturing and inclusive learning environment

  • Adapting activities to meet individual needs

  • Using observations to monitor children’s development

  • Working closely with families

  • Seeking advice from external professionals where appropriate

Our SENCO, Helen Watson, leads and supports SEND practice within the setting.

Helen works closely with staff, families and external professionals to ensure children receive the support they need, her role includes:

  • Monitoring children’s development and progress

  • Supporting staff to adapt learning opportunities

  • Working with parents to create support plans

  • Liaising with external agencies and specialists

Strong partnerships with families are essential when supporting children with SEND. We work closely with parents and carers to:

  • Share information about their child’s development

  • Agree appropriate support strategies

  • Review progress and next steps

  • Ensure children receive consistent support at nursery and home

Support from External Professionals

Where additional support is needed, we may work with professionals such as:

  • Speech and Language Therapists

  • Educational Psychologists

  • Health Visitors

  • Early Years Advisory Teachers

  • The Local Authority SEND team

This collaborative approach helps ensure children receive the right support at the right time.

Children’s progress is regularly reviewed through observations and discussions with parents.

If additional support is needed, we may create targeted support plans to help children develop specific skills and achieve positive outcomes.
